Survey for Skool
Hey guys, school sucks (hence the lack of updates). And to prove it, I have this survey. Yes, I need people to take it, and I would really appreciate it if you guys did. Apologies for the spam, but more so than that, for asking you to answer inane questions.
Mini Survey
Read over the following statements and determine if they are true or false. Then ask five people you know to do the same thing. Interview your subjects about their answers. Be sure to make notes about any comments you receive from them. Keep these notes so you can refer to them again toward the end of the course.
- English is becoming the international language because it is considered better than other languages.
- Linguists make judgments about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ languages.
- Languages spoken in non-literate societies are less complex than those spoken in literate societies.
- There are languages that don’t mark verbs for tense.
- Sign language is basically a system of gestures with no rules for grammar.
- All languages change over time.
- Regional varieties of American English are becoming less distinct because external forces such as the media are causing everyone to sound alike.
- Children who are non-native speakers of English will never catch up to their English-speaking peers educationally.
- Some accents are better than others.
- Children learn their first language by imitating the speech of others around them.
- African-American English (sometimes referred to as Ebonics) is a rule governed, systematic variety of English.
- Chinese is difficult to learn even as a first language.
- Linguists consider the use of double negatives ill-formed and ungrammatical.
- There is no standard pronunciation for English.
- All languages have the same word order, Subject-Verb-Object.
- Children must be taught the rules of grammar in order to communicate effectively in their native language.
